Submit SuggestionThere is no European video platform with YouTube's reach, but there are three European YouTube alternatives with different aims. Dailymotion from Paris is the closest to YouTube for watching and publishing ad-financed videos. PeerTube from the French non-profit Framasoft is the open, decentralised option without ads and tracking. alugha from Germany is built for multilingual videos with several audio tracks.
| Platform | Base | Model | Best for | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dailymotion | Paris, France (Canal+ group) | Central platform, ad-financed | Viewing and publishing, media publishers, creators | Creator Support Program only in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg; ad-based partner accounts elsewhere |
| PeerTube | Framasoft, France (non-profit) | Open-source software, federated network of instances | Own video site, communities, privacy | No central audience, no recommendation engine like YouTube's; reach depends on the chosen instance |
| alugha | Germany | Platform with player and AI dubbing tools | Multilingual videos for brands and creators | Business focus, not a general entertainment destination |
YouTube's strength is its audience and its recommendations, and no European platform replicates that. Most creators publish on YouTube first, so viewers have little reason to leave. Dailymotion has a large catalogue of news, sport and entertainment but is not the first stop for most independent creators. PeerTube says itself that it does not aim to replace YouTube but to offer something different, and PeerTube channels can be synchronised automatically from YouTube or Vimeo, which makes a parallel presence easy.
If the goal is hosting your own videos instead of reaching a public audience, European video infrastructure fits better than a social platform. Examples in our category Video & Live Stream Hosting are Bunny Stream, Jet-Stream and mave. These providers sell video hosting, encoding and delivery as a service, and the videos run in your own site or app rather than on a public portal. Prices and limits differ, so check each provider before committing. For film and series streaming rather than user uploads, see European video streaming services. For music videos and playlists, see alternatives to YouTube Music.
Google Takeout can export your own uploaded videos from YouTube. PeerTube instances can import a channel, and Dailymotion lets you upload through the Studio. Subscribers do not move with the videos, so it helps to point viewers to the new address in the channel description.
Not in the sense of one dominant platform. Dailymotion (France) is the closest established video site, PeerTube is a European open-source network, and alugha serves multilingual business video.
It is a good choice for people who want no ads, no tracking and a platform that follows open rules. It is a weaker choice for anyone who needs a large automatic audience, because discovery is spread across many instances.
Dailymotion offers monetisation through partner accounts. A separate Creator Support Program is currently open only in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg, according to Dailymotion's help centre.
For multilingual training or marketing videos, alugha. For hosting videos in one's own website, a European video hosting provider such as Bunny Stream, Jet-Stream or mave.
