Locks are one of Europe's strongest industries. The market for cylinders, padlocks, safes and access systems is led by companies from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland and Italy, many of them family businesses that are over a hundred years old. This page lists the European lock and security brands and explains where each one fits.

For homes and private use

ABUS and BURG-WÄCHTER are the main German names for padlocks, bicycle locks, door and window security, safes and smart door locks, and both are sold in hardware stores. Yale sells smart locks, alarms and cameras for homeowners and belongs to the Swedish group ASSA ABLOY.

For buildings and companies

ABLOY from Finland is known for its disc detainer cylinders. EVVA from Vienna and ISEO from Italy supply mechanical and electronic locking systems, and dormakaba from Switzerland covers door hardware, keys and digital access control. These brands are usually installed by locksmiths rather than bought off the shelf.

Good to know

Several brands on this list belong to the same group, for example ABLOY and Yale to ASSA ABLOY, so the choice of brand does not always mean a different owner. Yale originated in the United States but today belongs to a Swedish group. Padlocks from US brands such as Master Lock are common in shops, but the brands listed here cover the same use cases. For serious protection, a lock should be installed correctly, and a certified cylinder helps with insurance requirements.
