European tyre brands on this page are Michelin from France, Continental from Germany, Pirelli from Italy, Nokian Tyres from Finland and Vredestein from the Netherlands. They make tyres for cars and other vehicles, and several have a history of well over a century. A brand counts as European here when the company behind it has its headquarters in Europe, even if its tyres are made in plants around the world.

Which brand fits which need?

  • Winter and northern conditions: Nokian Tyres stresses its Nordic winter tyre heritage.
  • Performance and sports cars: Pirelli with the P Zero range and motorsport links, and Vredestein as a niche high-end brand.
  • Broad range for everyday cars: Michelin and Continental cover many vehicle types.

Ownership and manufacturing

Pirelli's largest shareholder, with 34.1 percent according to Reuters in June 2026, is Marco Polo International, a vehicle of the Chinese state-owned group Sinochem. That is not a majority. Vredestein is owned by Apollo Tyres of India and carries a note about its non-European parent. The country on each brand card refers to the company headquarters, not to the plant where a tyre is made.

What Europe does not offer

Several large tyre makers are based outside Europe, among them Bridgestone from Japan. Compare tyres by the EU tyre label for fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise rather than by brand origin alone. For the Japanese market leader, see European alternatives to Bridgestone.
