Busuu is an online language learning service launched in 2008 by Bernhard Niesner and Adrian Hilti. It combines self-paced lessons with practice and feedback from an international learner community, with content organized around practical language skills.

Short, structured lessons

Courses use expert-created bite-sized lessons, videos featuring native speakers and checkpoint quizzes. Learners can study reading, writing, listening and speaking in short sessions, then return to a course as their schedule allows. The platform is available on the web and through mobile apps.

Practice with other speakers

Busuu's online Community lets learners submit written or spoken exercises and receive corrections and tips from fluent speakers. This adds feedback to independent study and gives learners a way to practise language used in everyday conversations.

Progress and proficiency levels

The courses align with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or CEFR. Checkpoints and level tests track progress, and learners can earn Busuu certificates on completing course milestones. AI-powered grammar exercises provide another form of guided practice.

Personal and workplace learning

Individuals use the service for study, travel, work and personal goals. Busuu also offers language programmes for businesses; its official site says more than 600 organisations use Busuu for Business. The platform offers self-directed learning as well as structured corporate courses.

From a student project to a global service

The founders developed Busuu while studying for MBAs at IE Business School in Spain, and launched it after graduating. Busuu became part of the US education company Chegg in January 2022,
