DNS4EU

Website

DNS4EU is a public DNS resolver operated by Whalebone s.r.o., a cybersecurity company based in Brno, Czech Republic. It started as an EU co-funded project (2023 to 2025) run by a consortium of companies, national CERTs and research institutions under Whalebone's lead. The public service went live on 9 June 2025, and the project website says it has been fully owned and operated by Whalebone since 2026. The free service is open to individuals in Europe.

Features

  • Five variants: protective resolution (86.54.11.1), protective with child protection, protective with ad blocking, protective with both, and an unfiltered resolver
  • Blocking of malware, phishing and command-and-control domains, fed by threat intelligence from European CERTs and partners
  • DNS over HTTPS and DNS over TLS on every variant, over IPv4 and IPv6
  • Hosted and operated within the EU; a form to report wrongly blocked sites

Privacy and limits

The resolver policy states that client IP addresses are anonymised with a key that rotates daily before queries are logged and are never written to non-volatile storage. The policy lists a few narrow exceptions, for example attack defence, where data is deleted at the latest six months after the attack ends. Compared with Quad9 the service is young, and the free offer is limited to individuals in Europe; organisations are pointed to Whalebone's commercial products.
