/e/OS
Website/e/OS is an open source mobile operating system developed by e Foundation, a French nonprofit association registered in Paris in 2018. It is based on Android and LineageOS code, with a focus on reducing reliance on Google services. Users can install it on supported phones or choose a Murena device sold with the system.
An Android based alternative
The project adapts the Android platform for people seeking more control over mobile data and default services. It includes familiar smartphone functions and can run many Android applications. The e Foundation documentation provides device installation instructions and a list of supported models.
App Lounge and compatibility
App Lounge brings together commercial Android apps, open source apps from F-Droid and progressive web apps. Users can browse without signing in to a Google account. The store displays information about each app’s trackers and requested permissions, helping users compare software before installing it.
Privacy controls in the system
Advanced Privacy provides controls for app trackers, location simulation and hiding an IP address. These controls are designed to limit data exposure from third party apps. The documentation explains that some privacy settings can affect app behavior, so people can adjust controls for individual apps when needed.
Installation and support
/e/OS can be installed by technically confident users on compatible devices, while Murena sells phones with the system already configured. The project also documents updates, backups, app installation and troubleshooting.
