Gitea

Website

Gitea is a lightweight, self-hosted software forge written in Go. It covers Git hosting, code review with pull requests, issue tracking, a package registry and CI/CD through Gitea Actions. The project began in 2016 as a fork of Gogs and is released under the MIT licence. Commercial services around it come from CommitGo, Inc., a Delaware company founded by members of the project's Technical Oversight Committee. Gitea is listed here because the software is open source and can run on your own server.

Features

  • Repositories, pull requests and code review
  • Gitea Actions, a CI/CD system whose workflow syntax is closely compatible with GitHub Actions
  • Issues, labels, milestones and kanban boards
  • Package registry for more than 20 formats such as npm, PyPI, Maven and container images
  • Runs on Linux, Windows, macOS and FreeBSD with SQLite, MySQL or PostgreSQL

Editions and Forgejo

The open source edition is free and has no user limit. CommitGo sells Gitea Enterprise, which adds SAML single sign-on and support with an SLA, and the managed service Gitea Cloud. Forgejo, which is also listed on this site, is a community fork of Gitea that started in late 2022 and has been developed independently since early 2024, so the two projects now differ in governance and features.
