Joplin

Website

Joplin is an open-source note-taking application created by Laurent Cozic and developed since 2016. It has more than 56,000 stars on GitHub. Since 2022 a company called Joplin, based in France, handles the commercial side (Joplin Cloud and Joplin Server), and the project states a permanent commitment to keep the apps open source.

Features

  • Apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, plus a terminal app
  • Rich text or Markdown editor, plugins, custom themes and a web clipper for Chrome and Firefox
  • End-to-end encryption for synchronised notes
  • Sync through Joplin Cloud, Dropbox, OneDrive and other services, so users choose where their notes are stored

Joplin Cloud and privacy

Joplin Cloud is the paid sync and sharing service, hosted in France, with plans from EUR 2.99 per month. Joplin Server can also be self-hosted. The apps send no data to any service without permission, but a few default features, such as the update check and geo-location lookup, contact third-party hosts unless they are switched off. The privacy policy lists each one. Notes are kept in Joplin's own storage and sync target, so a vault is not a plain folder of Markdown files as in some other tools.
