Meliá Hotels International

Meliá Hotels International is a Spanish hotel group registered in Palma de Mallorca and part of the Ibex 35 index. Gabriel Escarrer Juliá founded the company in 1956, and his son Gabriel Escarrer Jaume leads it today. According to its 2025 governance report, Meliá has more than 400 hotels open or in development in more than 40 countries.

Ownership and limits

Several holding companies of the founding family, named Hoteles Mallorquines, are significant shareholders, and the family keeps a leading role in management. The group is strongest in leisure resorts, so the choice of business hotels is smaller than at Accor or IHG.
