Meopta is a Czech optics manufacturer whose history began in Přerov in 1933, when Optikotechna started making lenses and condensers. After the Second World War, the company was renamed Meopta and expanded into cameras, enlargers, projectors and optical instruments. Its current legal entity, Meopta s.r.o., is registered in Přerov.

From Optikotechna to Meopta

Early products included lenses, darkroom equipment and binoculars. In the postwar period, Meopta became a major manufacturer of photographic enlargers and cinema projectors in Central and Eastern Europe. The company later returned to rifle scope production and developed a range of sports optics for consumer use.

Binoculars and sports optics

The current catalog includes binoculars, riflescopes and spotting scopes for activities such as nature observation, hunting and target shooting. Models vary in magnification and size, with options for different lighting, distance and field conditions. Meopta’s product pages describe both compact instruments and larger optical systems.

Optical design and protection

Meopta lists its own coatings, including MeoBright for antireflection and MeoShield for abrasion protection. Some products add water repellent coatings and sealed construction. The company provides technical specifications and product support information to help buyers compare optical performance, durability and intended use.

Czech production and ownership

Meopta says it develops and manufactures primarily in the Czech Republic and serves consumer, industrial and defense markets. In 2023, the company was acquired by the US investment group Carlyle, as noted in its official merger notice. The brand retains its base and manufacturing activity in Přerov.
