monocles chat

Website

monocles chat is an Android chat app for the open XMPP protocol, based on Conversations with features from blabber.im and Cheogram. It is free software under the GPL-3.0 and developed in the open on Codeberg.[1][2] The project behind it, monocles, runs its own servers and lists a German VAT ID.[3]

Features

The app supports end-to-end encryption with OTR, OMEMO or OpenPGP, images, files, locations and voice messages, group chats, audio and video calls and a daily local database backup. It synchronises message history with other clients and does not send your address book to the server.[1]

Decentralised by design

Because monocles chat uses XMPP, you can talk to anyone on a compatible server, not only to monocles users.[3] Registrations for monocles accounts were closed at the time of checking, so you may need an account on another XMPP server.[3]

Limits

The app is available for Android only. The repository notes that some new features were co-created with an AI.[2]
