Nextcloud

Website

Nextcloud is a German software company and the name of its open-source collaboration platform. Frank Karlitschek and Niels Mache started it in June 2016. Nextcloud GmbH has its head office in Berlin and an office in Stuttgart. Organisations run Nextcloud on their own servers or at a hosting partner, so files, calendars and chats stay under their own control.

Features

  • Nextcloud Files: file sync and sharing with desktop and mobile clients, fine-grained sharing controls, audit logs, server-side encryption and optional client-side end-to-end encryption
  • Nextcloud Talk for chat and video calls, plus Groupware with mail, calendar and contacts
  • Document editing in the browser through Nextcloud Office, workflow automation with Nextcloud Flow and an AI Assistant
  • Integrations with other tools and one-click migration helpers from proprietary platforms

Licence and model

The company states that everything it builds is open source, without an open-core split or proprietary extensions. The software is free to run yourself; companies that want support buy an Enterprise subscription. Running Nextcloud on a server means taking care of updates and backups, which hosting partners can do instead. Compared with pure storage services, the platform covers much more than file storage, which also makes it larger to set up.
