OpenNebula
WebsiteOpenNebula is an open-source platform for cloud and virtualization management, developed and managed by OpenNebula Systems S.L. The company's EMEA headquarters is in Pozuelo de Alarcón near Madrid, Spain; it also lists a US headquarters in Burlington, Massachusetts, and labs in Brussels and Brno. The software is licensed under Apache 2.0. OpenNebula positions itself as a vendor-neutral VMware replacement that also covers private clouds and sovereign cloud projects.
Features
- One management layer for virtual machines, containers and Kubernetes clusters, on private, edge and public infrastructure
- Scheduling, high availability and multi-site federation, which the vendor compares with VMware's feature set
- Self-service portal and multi-tenancy for teams and customers
- Migration tooling for VMware environments
- Subscription with SLA-based support, consulting and managed cloud services
Fit and limits
OpenNebula is aimed at organisations and service providers that run several sites or a private cloud, not only a few hosts. It is more of a cloud platform than a simple hypervisor, so planning and learning take longer than with Proxmox VE. The vendor takes part in European cloud initiatives such as IPCEI-CIS, which matters to buyers with sovereignty requirements.
