Pilsner Urquell

Website

Pilsner Urquell is a Czech beer brand from Plzeň (Pilsen). It has been brewed since 1842, when the burghers of Pilsen set up their own brewery, and the brand points to Josef Groll as the brewmaster of the first golden pilsner. The company, Plzeňský Prazdroj, a.s., runs its brewery at U Prazdroje 64/7 in Plzeň, and the beer is brewed only there.

Brands and range

  • Pilsner Urquell: a pilsner using Moravian barley, Saaz hops and soft Plzeň water, with triple-decocted malt
  • Kozel and Radegast: further Czech brands listed in the Asahi portfolio

Ownership

South African Breweries acquired Plzeňský Prazdroj in 2001. In 2017 Asahi Group Holdings of Japan bought the central European beer business of SABMiller, which became part of Asahi Europe & International. The brewery and the company are Czech, but the parent company is non-European.
