Proton Docs

Proton Docs is the end-to-end encrypted document editor inside Proton Drive, built by the Swiss privacy company Proton. Proton announced it in July 2024 and developed it together with the team of Standard Notes. Since then an encrypted spreadsheet editor, Proton Sheets, has been added to Drive as well.

Features

• Real-time editing with cursors and presence indicators, comments and replies for feedback without touching the text
• Sharing by invitation or secure link with internal and external collaborators, on desktop, tablet and mobile
• Upload of .docx files and download as .docx, .txt, .md or HTML
• End-to-end encryption that, according to Proton, also covers keystrokes and cursor movements; neither content nor file names are readable for Proton
• Proton Sheets: import of Excel or Google Sheets files, formulas, charts and live collaboration

Good to know

Docs and Sheets are part of a Proton Drive account, and Proton lets new users start with a free account. The editor is aimed at collaborative writing inside Proton's own ecosystem of mail, calendar and storage. Teams that need a self-hosted suite or want to edit with desktop programs can look at the other products in the office suites category.
