Rocket.Chat

Website

Rocket.Chat is an open source team communication platform that can be run on your own servers. It is developed by Rocket.Chat Technologies Corp., a US company whose website lists Wilmington, Delaware as its headquarters, with research and development in Porto Alegre, Brazil, where the project started in 2015. Rocket.Chat is listed here because the software is open source and can be self-hosted.

Features

  • Channels, groups, direct messages and threaded discussions with file sharing and searchable history
  • Voice and video calls through integrations such as Jitsi and BigBlueButton
  • Federation, so that separate workspaces can share channels
  • Security features such as end-to-end encryption and role-based access control, with the scope depending on the plan, plus mobile and desktop apps
  • A marketplace and an apps framework for integrations

Editions and limits

The Community Edition is released under the MIT licence and is free, but limited: self-hosted only, up to 100 concurrent users, 10,000 push notifications per month and basic integrations. Rocket.Chat itself says it is not suitable for business-critical production use. A free Starter plan for up to 50 users includes many premium capabilities, and larger or regulated deployments and air-gapped installations need a paid plan. Code in the repository's ee directories is licensed separately from the MIT part.
