Solid State Logic
WebsiteSolid State Logic (SSL) is a British audio manufacturer serving music production, live sound, film and broadcast. Colin Sanders founded the company in 1969 in Oxfordshire, where he began building mixing consoles. SSL's UK headquarters remain at Begbroke Manor, and the company is now part of Audiotonix.
From early electronics to consoles
SSL first made switching systems for pipe organs. Sanders later built consoles at Acorn Studios, and the SL 4000 series helped establish the company in professional recording. The 4000 E, introduced in 1979, became a fixture in recording studios.
Studio equipment
The current studio range includes analogue and digital consoles, small mixers, audio interfaces, monitor controllers, channel processors and plug-ins. Interfaces such as SSL 2, SSL 12 and SSL 18 connect microphones and instruments to computer recording systems.
Live and broadcast systems
SSL also makes consoles and networked audio equipment for touring, venues, radio, television and outside broadcasts. Its Live consoles support front-of-house and monitor mixing, while System T products serve broadcast and post-production workflows.
Software and control
Controllers and the SSL 360 software connect selected hardware with digital audio workstations. Plug-ins recreate processing tools used in SSL consoles, allowing engineers to apply equalization, dynamics and other effects inside a computer session.
Tools for production teams
Studios use SSL systems to record, edit and mix music. Production companies use them for live events, film sound and broadcast programs. The range runs from personal recording interfaces and plug-ins to large consoles for purpose-built studios and control rooms.
