Spybot Search & Destroy

Spybot Search & Destroy is a cybersecurity program from Safer-Networking Ltd., an Irish company based in Greystones, County Wicklow. The software began as a response to unwanted advertising software and grew into a set of Windows tools for finding spyware, adware and other unwanted programs. Safer-Networking says its products have served millions of users worldwide for more than two decades.

From a small removal tool to a security suite

Developer Patrick Kolla made the first Spybot available to other computer users around 2000. Volunteers joined as Team Spybot, helping identify threats, translate the program and answer questions. Safer-Networking later formed as a company to develop and distribute the software. Spybot remains the company's flagship product, and its official history describes later additions such as the Anti-Beacon privacy tool and additional security editions.

Scanning for spyware and unwanted software

The vendor says Spybot can search for and remove spyware, adware, tracking software and keyloggers. Its product pages also describe system scans for malware and results that users can review before fixing detected items. Paid editions can include additional protection such as antivirus and real-time monitoring. Features are edition specific, so the comparison table and product page should be checked before choosing a license.

Immunization and system tools

Spybot's Immunization feature is described as a preventive measure that blocks access to known malicious or unwanted sites and addresses tracking cookies and browser plugins. Other listed utilities include startup controls for reviewing programs that load with Windows and a rootkit scan that checks areas where hidden software may operate. The software also provides update and support information through its knowledge base and forum.

Options for private and business use

Safer-Networking lists a free edition for personal use as well as Home and Professional subscriptions. Its product catalogue also includes family packages, corporate licensing and a Technician Edition. These packages have different feature sets and license terms. The official site provides the current download, product comparison, documentation and contact details for customers who need to check compatibility or choose an edition.
