Ubuntu Touch

Website

Ubuntu Touch is an open-source mobile operating system based on Linux. It grew out of Canonical's Ubuntu Phone project and is now developed by the UBports community. The UBports Foundation, a charitable foundation under German law with its registered seat in Berlin, supports the project legally and financially. Ubuntu Touch is a Linux alternative to Android for phones and tablets.

Features

  • Lomiri: the desktop environment adapts to any screen size, so a phone connected to a display, keyboard and mouse can work like a PC (convergence).
  • Apps: native apps come from the OpenStore. On some devices Android apps run through Waydroid.
  • UBports Installer: installs Ubuntu Touch on supported devices. The project also maintains Halium, a hardware adaptation layer that other mobile Linux systems use as well.
  • Open source: all UBports projects are released under OSI-approved licences.

Devices and limits

Ubuntu Touch runs on a list of supported devices, and Volla sells phones and tablets with it. The app selection is smaller than on Android. According to the UBports documentation, apps that need Google's Play Integrity, such as banking apps, are unlikely to run in Waydroid. The system is built by volunteers and funded by donations and sponsors.
