Vespa.ai

Website

Vespa.ai is a search and AI serving platform from Trondheim, Norway. Its technology goes back to AllTheWeb, a Norwegian search engine that Yahoo acquired in 2003. Vespa was released as open source in 2017 and spun out of Yahoo as an independent company in October 2023. In November 2023 it raised a 31 million US dollar Series A led by the London fund Blossom Capital. Yahoo kept a stake and remains its biggest customer.

Features

  • One engine for text search, vector search, structured data and tensors, combined in a single query
  • Use cases from search and retrieval-augmented generation to recommendation and ad targeting
  • Model inference runs directly where the data lives, scaling to large data volumes and query loads
  • Open source, with the managed service Vespa Cloud for teams that do not want to run clusters themselves

Good to know

Vespa is built for large, demanding workloads: Yahoo used it for about 150 applications serving nearly a billion users when it was spun out. That scale comes with a steeper learning curve than a tool like Meilisearch. The ownership split between the founders, Blossom Capital and Yahoo is not published in detail.
