XCP-ng
WebsiteXCP-ng is an open-source virtualization platform based on the Xen hypervisor and on the XenServer code. It is developed as a community project and backed by Vates SAS, a French open-source software company based in Grenoble. Vates was registered in 2012 and also builds Xen Orchestra, the web interface and backup platform for XCP-ng. Together they are sold as Vates VMS with professional support.
Features
- Xen-based hypervisor for Windows and Linux virtual machines on bare metal
- Xen Orchestra as web interface for hosts, pools, live migration, snapshots and backup
- Tools for migrating virtual machines from VMware (ESXi) to XCP-ng, described as a few clicks in Xen Orchestra
- Upgrade path from XenServer, regular long-term-support releases
- Pro support and the Vates VMS stack for companies that want a vendor contract
Strengths and limits
XCP-ng fits teams that know the Xen world or want a classic hypervisor with pools and shared storage, and it has a clear commercial support path from a European vendor. The project is smaller than Proxmox VE and has no container platform built in, so Linux containers need a separate setup. Some Xen Orchestra functions are reserved for the paid edition.
