Zorin OS
WebsiteZorin OS is a Linux desktop operating system developed by Zorin OS Technologies Limited in Dublin, Ireland. Begun in 2008, it is designed for people moving from Windows or macOS. Core is free; Pro is paid.
Irish Linux project
The developers say they set out to make Linux easier for everyday computer users. Zorin OS is open source and based on Ubuntu. The Irish company maintains system packages, patches, drivers and desktop applications for its editions.
Familiar desktop
The Zorin Appearance app lets users adjust the desktop layout to suit a familiar way of working. Editions include Core for general use, Education for schools, Pro for additional apps and layouts, and Lite, which uses the XFCE desktop.
Software and compatibility
The software store supports APT, Flatpak, Snap, .deb and AppImage applications. Windows .exe and .msi installers can be opened with the optional Windows App Support layer, which uses Wine. Zorin cautions that some Windows apps may not work correctly.
Phone and accessibility
Zorin Connect pairs the desktop with an Android phone over an encrypted local network. It can sync notifications, transfer files and control media. Accessibility tools include a screen reader, magnifier and click assistance. The interface is translated into more than 100 languages.
Current release
Zorin OS 18.1 is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and is listed for security updates until June 2029. Users can try the system from a USB drive before installing it. This lets them check their hardware and workflow first.
