European alternatives to Firefox include LibreWolf, Mullvad Browser (Sweden), Vivaldi (Norway), Opera (Norway) and Ecosia Browser (Germany). Firefox is developed by Mozilla in the United States. People look for a Firefox alternative when they want stronger privacy settings out of the box, a different feature set or a vendor with another business model.
Same engine or a new one
The alternatives split into two groups. LibreWolf and Mullvad Browser build on Firefox code, so websites and many extensions behave much like in Firefox. Vivaldi, Opera and Ecosia Browser are based on Chromium, the engine behind Google Chrome, and use its extension store.
The browsers compared
| Browser | Origin | Base | Focus |
| LibreWolf | Community project | Firefox | Firefox with telemetry removed, uBlock Origin included |
| Mullvad Browser | Sweden | Firefox | Fingerprinting protection developed with the Tor Project, meant to be used with a VPN |
| Vivaldi | Norway | Chromium | Customisable interface with built-in tools such as notes and screenshots |
| Opera | Norway | Chromium | Built-in ad blocker, sidebar apps and a free VPN |
| Ecosia Browser | Germany | Chromium | Desktop browser of the search engine Ecosia, launched in April 2024 |
Ownership matters
Opera has its headquarters in Oslo, but according to its 2024 annual report a Chinese company, Kunlun, indirectly holds about 69 percent of the shares. The directory marks this with a note on the product page. Vivaldi, Mullvad Browser and Ecosia Browser are not marked.
What to check before switching
- Which extensions are used, and whether they exist for the new browser.
- How bookmarks, passwords and open tabs are imported or synced.
- Whether strict privacy settings break logins or banking sites, which can happen with Mullvad Browser and LibreWolf.
