Business VPN and zero trust access software connects employees, administrators and machines to company networks and applications from outside the office. A classic VPN gateway opens a tunnel into a whole network. Zero trust products grant access per user, device and application instead and check each connection again. The providers on this page are headquartered in Europe: NetBird and genua (Germany), LANCOM (Germany, now Rohde & Schwarz Networks and Cybersecurity) and Stormshield (France). They are meant for organisations. VPNs for private users are listed under VPN services.

Which fits which need

  • A mesh network for teams and servers: NetBird is software that connects devices directly and is the closest match for people who know tools like Tailscale.
  • Official security requirements: genua holds BSI approvals for processing German VS-NfD data, and Stormshield offers products certified by European agencies.
  • Network equipment for company sites: LANCOM covers WAN, LAN and WLAN hardware plus firewalls, while genua and Stormshield focus on firewalls and VPN gateways.

What to check before choosing

  • Clients and access: Does every device need software, or can some users connect through the browser?
  • Identity: Look for a connection to the company login system, single sign-on and multi-factor authentication.
  • Where the management runs: self-hosted on the company's own servers or in the provider's cloud.
  • Certifications: Approvals such as the BSI's matter for public authorities and regulated industries.

What Europe does not offer

The large cloud-delivered zero trust and SASE platforms, where traffic runs through the provider's own global network, come mostly from US companies. The European providers in this directory are either software overlay networks or firewall and gateway products that customers operate themselves. NetBird is also a young company compared with the established network vendors.
