IKEA Logo

IKEA is a home furnishing retailer founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad in Älmhult, Sweden. Today the concept is owned by Inter IKEA Systems B.V. in the Netherlands, which acts as franchisor, while the stores are run by franchisees. The largest franchisee, Ingka Group, is based in Leiden, the Netherlands. This listing covers IKEA as a furniture and home furnishing brand, not the separate IKEA Smart Home product.

Range

  • Flat pack furniture for living, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and children's rooms, among them classics such as the BILLY bookcase, the KALLAX shelf, the MALM bed and the POÄNG armchair
  • Textiles, lighting, storage and kitchen equipment
  • Stores, online ordering, assembly and delivery services

Ownership

Both parts of the structure are held by foundations without individual beneficiaries: Inter IKEA Group by the Inter IKEA Foundation and Ingka Group by Stichting INGKA Foundation. There is no non-European parent. IKEA stands for low prices and self assembly, so quality and lifespan are aimed at the mass market, not at lifetime furniture.
