Choosing a chain

  • Furnishing a whole home: IKEA and JYSK sell furniture and furnishings, Maisons du Monde focuses on style worlds.
  • Small items and gifts: Søstrene Grene, Flying Tiger and HEMA are the places for decoration, stationery and everyday objects, Action does the same at discount prices.
  • Textiles and tableware: Zara Home is the fashion group's home line.

Ownership

No chain here carries the non-European parent flag. IKEA is held through Dutch foundations, JYSK belongs to the Danish Lars Larsen Group, HEMA to the Dutch Van Eerd family since February 2026, and Søstrene Grene to the family of its founders. Action is held mostly by 3i of London.

What Europe does not offer as one brand

American chains such as Target or Bed Bath & Beyond have no European stores, and the discount chains TK Maxx and HomeSense belong to the US group TJX, so they are not listed. For furniture alone see the page on European furniture, for kitchenware the page on tableware.
