komoot

komoot is a route planner and navigation app for hiking, cycling, mountain biking and running. It started in Potsdam, Germany, and reported 45 million users in March 2025. That month it was sold to Bending Spoons, an Italian technology company based in Milan. The operating company, komoot GmbH, is registered in Schönefeld near Berlin.

The basic app is free. Premium is a paid subscription that unlocks the features above. komoot is proprietary software for Android, iOS and the web, and its maps are based on OpenStreetMap data. When the sale was announced, heise reported that job cuts were planned, so the long-term direction of the product is worth watching.
