Matomo
WebsiteMatomo is an open-source web analytics platform developed by InnoCraft Limited, a company registered in Wellington, New Zealand. The project began in 2007 under the name Piwik, founded by Matthieu Aubry from France, and its remote team members are based in New Zealand, Germany, Austria, France, the USA and India. The company is not European, but the software can be self-hosted, so the data then stays on the site owner's own server. The core is licensed under GPL-3.0.
Features
- Standard reports on visitors, pages, sources, goals and ecommerce
- Segments, API access, raw data access and a Google Analytics data importer
- Premium plugins such as heatmaps, session recordings, funnels and A/B tests
- A GDPR manager for anonymisation and deletion requests
- According to Matomo, a configuration without tracking consent that follows the French data protection authority CNIL
Hosting and pricing
Self-hosting the core is free. InnoCraft also sells Matomo Cloud, which it hosts in Europe, with a 21-day free trial, and paid support plans and plugins.
Matomo covers far more than simple visitor counting. The price for that is a larger interface and more setup and maintenance work, especially when self-hosted.
