Submit SuggestionWeb analytics tools measure how many people visit a website, where they come from and what they do there. The tools on this page are Google Analytics alternatives built around privacy-friendly measurement: smaller data sets, no profiles of individual visitors and hosting in Europe or on the site owner's own server. Searches for "GDPR analytics" or "European analytics" lead to this group. Four of the six tools come from European companies. Matomo (New Zealand) and Umami (USA) are included although their companies sit outside Europe, because both are open source and can be self-hosted. The page on European alternatives to Google Analytics covers the switch in more detail.
Google Analytics 4 stores identifiers in cookies and links visits to a user. Privacy-friendly tools usually count visits without long-lived identifiers. The trade-off is less detail: no individual paths across devices and no advertising audiences.
Whether a cookie banner is needed depends on the technology and on national law. German data protection authorities, for example, expect consent for reach measurement that stores or reads data on the visitor's device, unless narrow exceptions apply. Several providers here state that their tools run without cookies and without consent. Those are the vendors' own claims, not legal advice, and no software is compliant by itself. Anyone looking for GDPR-compliant web analytics should check the configuration, the data processing agreement and the legal basis for their own site.
Self-hosting Plausible, Matomo or Umami keeps all data on one's own server but means taking care of updates, backups and security. Cloud services take that work away. Simple Analytics, etracker and Piwik PRO are offered as cloud services only.
