n8n is a workflow automation platform from Berlin. Jan Oberhauser founded n8n GmbH in 2019, and the tool is published under a fair-code licence: the source code is public and can be self-hosted, but n8n may not be resold as a competing hosted service. By its own account n8n has raised about $240 million in funding.

Features

  • Node-based editor where triggers, app nodes and logic are wired together, with JavaScript or Python for custom steps
  • Self-hosting through the free Community Edition on GitHub, or hosted plans in a data centre in Frankfurt
  • AI orchestration: language models and agents can be used as workflow steps
  • Plans are measured in workflow executions, a single run counts once no matter how many steps it has

Plans and limits

Hosted plans are named Starter and Pro, the Business plan is for self-hosting, and Enterprise is priced on request. Because of the licence terms n8n counts as source-available rather than open source. Compared with Make, it asks for a little more technical comfort but gives more control over where the data lives.
