Stoat

Website

Stoat is an open-source chat app for friends and communities, formerly known as Revolt.[1] It is operated by Revolt Platforms Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales with its registered office in London.[2][3] Many people still search for it as Revolt chat, Revolt messenger or Revolt voice chat.

Features

Stoat offers servers with channels, voice chat, file sharing and markdown. Communities get role-based permissions and moderation tools, and apps exist for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and the web. Group DMs support up to 50 members. Custom emojis, a 20 MB upload limit and a server-specific profile picture are available without a subscription.[4]

Open source and self-hosting

The project is free and open source, and you can host your own server if you do not want to use the official one. A public API lets developers build bots and custom clients, and the issue tracker is open.[4]

Limits

The product page does not advertise end-to-end encrypted messages, so Stoat is better suited to community chat than to confidential conversations.[4]
