WeTransfer
WebsiteWeTransfer is the best-known file transfer service in this list. It was founded in Amsterdam in 2009 and is operated by Wetransfer B.V. In July 2024 it was acquired by Bending Spoons, a software company based in Milan, so the owner is European as well.
Features
- Free plan: up to 3 GB in total or 10 transfers per rolling 30 days, links valid for 3 days, a free account is required. Earlier free plans allowed 2 GB per transfer without limits per month.
- Starter plan: up to 300 GB or 10 transfers per 30 days.
- Ultimate plan: unlimited transfers of up to 1 TB each, custom expiry, password protection and branded pages. Teams and Enterprise add shared workspaces, admin tools and single sign-on.
- Files are encrypted with TLS in transit and AES-256 at rest; WeTransfer states that it holds ISO 27001 certification.
Hosting and limits
WeTransfer stores files in the EU (AWS in Ireland) when you upload from a European IP address and not through a proxy, otherwise in the US. The free plan has become tighter than before, and the 3-day lifetime is short. For larger free transfers and Swiss-only storage, SwissTransfer is the closest alternative.
