Submit SuggestionAnyone leaving ChatGPT (also written "Chat GPT") for a European alternative can choose between four assistants listed here: Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat) from Paris, Euria from Infomaniak and Lumo from Proton, both Swiss, and Ecosia AI Chat from Berlin. Mistral Vibe has the widest feature set and is the closest European ChatGPT alternative for everyday use. Lumo and Euria suit people who put privacy first, and Ecosia AI Chat adds to a search engine. The guide European AI explains what "European" means for chatbots, and the category European AI chatbots lists the same products.
| Assistant | Company | Free use | Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mistral Vibe (Le Chat) | Mistral AI, Paris, France | Free plan with limited messages and web searches, paid Pro, Team and Enterprise | Own Mistral models |
| Euria | Infomaniak, Switzerland | Free within a rolling 24-hour message quota | Open-source models (Infomaniak names Mistral, DeepSeek and Llama among them) |
| Lumo | Proton, Switzerland | Free plan, also as guest without an account; paid Plus | Open-source models on Proton servers in Europe |
| Ecosia AI Chat | Ecosia, Berlin, Germany | Part of Ecosia search | Mistral Small 4 (named by Ecosia) |
Three of the four can be used free of charge within limits: the Free plan of Mistral Vibe, Euria within its quota (according to Infomaniak without an Infomaniak account) and the Lumo free plan, which also works as a guest. Mistral and Proton sell paid plans for heavier use. Ecosia AI Chat comes as part of the Ecosia search.
Proton lists German among Lumo's chat languages, Mistral has named German among the languages its models handle fluently since Mistral Large in 2024, and Infomaniak offers Euria's website and guides in German. How good the German answers are is best judged with your own questions, which the free versions allow.
Euria and Lumo are leaner than ChatGPT, Ecosia says its AI Chat is still being rolled out to some users, and Euria is not available in a list of countries, including India and Indonesia. Mistral Vibe has moved towards a work and coding agent, which casual users may find broader than they need. Answers from any assistant can be wrong or outdated. ChatGPT users can export their data in the account settings to keep old conversations, while custom instructions and projects have to be recreated by hand.
