Levi Strauss & Co. is an American clothing company headquartered in San Francisco. It was founded there in 1853, and in 1873 Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis received a US patent for riveted work pants, the origin of the blue jean. The company has been listed on the New York stock exchange since 2019 under the ticker LEVI, and the 501 is its best-known model.

European alternatives to Levi's

Jeans are made by many European brands. MUSTANG Jeans from Germany, Salsa Jeans from Portugal and G-Star RAW from the Netherlands are focused on denim. ARMEDANGELS from Germany and Acne Studios from Sweden offer denim within wider collections, as do the fashion chains H&M, Zara and Reserved.

What differs

  • G-Star RAW: The Dutch brand is shown with a note, because a US company holds a majority since 2023.
  • Fit: Levi's is known for its fixed numbered fits such as the 501. Most European brands name fits differently, so trying a pair on matters.
  • Price: The fashion chains are cheaper, the design labels more expensive than a standard pair of Levi's.
