Why teams look beyond SendGrid
Twilio retired the free SendGrid plan on 27 May 2025. New accounts now get a 60-day trial with 100 emails per day, and according to Twilio's pricing page the paid Email API plans start at 19.95 US dollars per month for Essentials and 89.95 US dollars for Pro. Other reasons are the US provider and a wish to keep email logs and addresses with a European company.
European transactional email services in the directory
- Mailjet (France): the closest feature match with email API, SMTP relay, templates, webhooks and a free plan of 200 emails per day. It belongs to Sinch, which also owns Mailgun.
- Brevo (France): a marketing platform with an API and SMTP relay for transactional email. It does more than sending, which makes it heavier for pure API use.
- Scaleway Transactional Email (France): API and SMTP relay with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, 300 emails included and billing per 1,000 emails after that. It has fewer marketing features.
- EmailLabs (Poland): email API, SMTP relay and dedicated IPs for higher volumes.
- rapidmail (Germany): a newsletter tool with transactional sending, servers in Germany. It is not a developer-first email API.
- Infobip (Croatia): an enterprise platform with an email API over HTTP or SMTP.

How the switch usually works
The SMTP relay credentials can often be swapped without code changes, while an API integration needs a new client call. Plan time for SPF, DKIM and DMARC records for the new service, for rebuilding webhooks and suppression lists, and for the warm-up of a dedicated IP.
