A crypto exchange lets customers buy, sell and store crypto assets such as Bitcoin and Ether against euros. The European exchanges below are headquartered in Europe and operate under the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), which requires providers to hold an authorisation as a crypto-asset service provider. They are the European options for people who want a Coinbase alternative. Crypto assets are highly volatile and can lose their whole value, and this page is not investment advice.

Which exchange fits which user

  • Beginners who want crypto next to other assets: Bitpanda sells crypto together with stocks, ETFs and precious metals in one app.
  • Euro payments in the Benelux region: Bitvavo is built around fast deposits by bank transfer in Europe and publishes its fee range.
  • Experienced and algorithmic traders: Bitstamp offers FIX, HTTP and WebSocket APIs.
  • Spanish-speaking users: Bit2Me is a Spanish provider with a wide product range from exchange to earn products and a card.

What to check before buying crypto

  • Authorisation: Check the provider in the public MiCA register of the regulator and avoid platforms without an EU authorisation.
  • Fees: Compare trading fees, spreads, deposit and withdrawal fees, not only the advertised price.
  • Custody: Crypto held on an exchange is not covered by a bank deposit guarantee. Long-term holdings can be moved to your own hardware wallet.
  • Taxes: Crypto gains are taxable in most countries, so keep the transaction history.

What Europe does not offer

Well-known large exchanges such as Coinbase and Kraken are headquartered in the United States, and Binance is not European either. Bitstamp is a European company, but its owner Robinhood is American, which is why it is marked as having a non-European parent. See the page on Coinbase alternatives.
