An online broker lets private investors buy and sell stocks, ETFs, bonds and other securities through an app or website, without a bank adviser. Neobrokers are the newer, app-first brokers with flat or very low fees. The brokers below are headquartered in Europe, hold European licences and are supervised by European authorities, which makes them candidates when looking for a European alternative to US apps such as Robinhood. This page is an overview, not investment advice, and investing always carries the risk of losing money.

Which broker fits which investor

  • Savings plans and ETFs in the euro area: Scalable Capital and Trade Republic are built for regular ETF savings plans and low entry amounts.
  • A wide choice of markets: DEGIRO and Saxo give access to many exchanges and to options and futures.
  • Active traders: XTB offers its own trading platform and also sells CFDs, which are leveraged and complex.
  • Nordic investors: Nordnet and Avanza are the established brokers of Sweden and its neighbours, including local pension and savings accounts.

What to check before opening a depot

  • Costs: Compare order fees, spreads, currency conversion and custody fees for the way you invest, not just the headline price.
  • Protection: Check which entity holds the securities and which compensation scheme applies. Price losses are never covered.
  • Taxes: Tax reporting and withholding differ by country, and not every broker handles them for every country.
  • Products: CFDs and leveraged products can lose more quickly than shares, regulators require warnings about this.

What Europe does not offer

There is no single pan-European broker with the same home market everywhere. Accounts, taxes and available products depend on the country of residence, and the Nordic brokers mainly serve the Nordic market. US platforms like Robinhood also sell crypto and derivatives in one app, which European brokers cover with different licences and sometimes separate partners. See the page on Robinhood alternatives.
