Lidl Logo

Lidl is a discount supermarket chain from Neckarsulm in Germany. It is run by Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG and belongs to the Schwarz Group, which also owns Kaufland. The first German Lidl store opened in Ludwigshafen-Mundenheim in 1973. Together, Lidl and Kaufland serve customers in 33 countries, according to the Schwarz Group.

Range

Lidl Germany says its stores carry about 4,300 individual articles, a deliberately limited range compared with a full-line supermarket. The company describes its promise as quality products that are affordable for every budget, and it names fair wages in the supply chain and the Planetary Health Diet among its focus areas for responsibility.

Where to find it

According to Lidl Germany's company website (2026), there are more than 3,250 stores in Germany and around 12,900 Lidl stores worldwide. The Schwarz Group counts about 14,500 stores for Lidl and Kaufland combined in its 2025 financial year.

Online shopping

Lidl calls itself a hybrid brand: the online offer at lidl.de is meant to complement the stores, not replace them. Delivery of groceries is not part of that statement, so availability of online grocery orders depends on the country and should be checked locally.
