Carrefour
WebsiteCarrefour is a French retail group with its registered office in Massy near Paris. It opened the first hypermarket in France in 1963 and launched Carrefour-brand products in 1976. According to its website, the group has a multi-format network of more than 15,000 stores in more than 40 countries and reported sales of 94.6 billion euros for 2024.
Formats and own brands
Carrefour runs hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores and franchised stores. It sells under its own Carrefour brand and the Reflets de France line from 1996, and it introduced the Carrefour Bio organic range in 1997. The group markets its programme "Act for Food" for healthier and more sustainable food.
Where to find it
In Europe the main markets are France, Spain, Belgium, Poland and Romania. Carrefour sold its Italian business to the NewPrinces Group, completed on 1 December 2025, so it no longer operates there under group control. Outside Europe, Brazil is a large market with its Atacadão cash-and-carry stores.
Ownership
Carrefour is listed on Euronext Paris. The largest shareholders are the Galfa holding (about 14 percent in the 2023 shareholder table), the Brazilian investor group Peninsula (about 9 percent), and a US bank position; around two thirds are free float. In November 2025 the Saadé family and CMA CGM joined with a stake of about 4 percent. No non-European holder controls the group.
