ALDI SÜD

Website

ALDI SÜD is the second of the two independent ALDI companies. Its headquarters is in Mülheim an der Ruhr, and it runs about 2,000 stores in southern and western Germany. The group says it operates around 6,520 stores in eleven countries on four continents with about 155,000 employees (company website, 2026). Karl and Theo Albrecht split the family business into ALDI SÜD and ALDI Nord in 1961, and the two companies are still linked by family ties.

Range

ALDI SÜD presents its stores as fresher than before, with fresh produce and an in-store bakery concept, and it promises good value for money across a compact range. Specific price comparisons with other chains are not made here.

Where to find it

Outside Germany, ALDI SÜD operates under its own name or, in Austria and Slovenia, as Hofer. According to the company (2026), there are around 530 stores in Austria, 220 in Switzerland, 150 in Ireland, 150 in Hungary, 140 in Italy and 90 in Slovenia in Europe, plus around 960 in the United Kingdom. Further stores are in the United States, Australia and China. Only the European part is relevant for this directory.

Ownership

ALDI SÜD is held by family foundations of the Albrecht family.
