Mercadona

Mercadona is a Spanish supermarket chain founded in 1977 by the Cárnicas Roig group. It is a family-owned company, headquartered in Albalat dels Sorells near Valencia, and the Roig family is named on its board. Mercadona says it covers five needs: food, drink, personal care, household care and pet care.

Range

The company positions itself as a supermarket that recommends what it considers the best option to the customer, whom it calls "El Jefe". Its stated aim is safe and healthy products with maximum service at the lowest possible budget and time. Prepared meals and a coffee machine service are offered in selected stores, according to its 2025 annual report.

Where to find it

Mercadona's company website lists 1,598 stores in Spain and 76 in Portugal, with a workforce of 115,000, of whom 7,500 are in Portugal. The 2025 annual report speaks of 1,672 stores in total. The chain serves about 6.4 million households each day, according to the company.

Online shopping

Mercadona runs online supermarkets alongside its stores (Mercadona Online). The 2025 annual report names the consolidation of Mercadona Online as one of the priorities of its logistics and digital work.
