Santa Maria is a Nordic spice and Tex-Mex food brand with Swedish roots. It grew out of Nordfalks, a small spice trader in Gothenburg in the early 1900s, and the company took the name Santa Maria AB in 2001. Santa Maria is part of the Paulig Group, a family-owned food and beverage company founded in Helsinki in 1876.

Markets and ownership

Paulig started as a trading house that imported coffee, spices, sugar and oils, so spices have been part of the group's business from the beginning. Its brands are Paulig, Santa Maria, Risenta, Gold&Green and Poco Loco. According to the company, Santa Maria has a strong position in Mexican food, spices and snacks in the UK and Ireland, where it operates as Santa Maria UK after taking over Discovery Foods in 2009.
