Kotányi

Website

Kotányi is an Austrian spice and seasoning company with roots in Hungary. János Kotányi founded the business in Szeged in 1881 and began processing paprika there. The company later expanded to Vienna and now has its headquarters and production site in Wolkersdorf in Lower Austria.

Founded in Szeged

The first Kotányi operation was a paprika mill in János Kotányi’s Hungarian home town. The company’s history page dates that start to 1881. It did not begin in Vienna, as an earlier version of this profile incorrectly stated.

Expansion to Austria

Demand for the paprika mixture led Kotányi to open a Vienna branch in 1884. The Austrian market became important as the company grew, but that branch should be distinguished from the original founding location in Hungary.

Spices and seasonings

Kotányi sells herbs, spices and spice blends for home kitchens and professional food preparation. Paprika remains central to its history, while the modern range covers many flavours and cooking styles.

Current headquarters

The company moved its premises to Wolkersdorf in Lower Austria in 1989. Its official material identifies the site as a headquarters and production location. For the directory, Austria describes the current company location; Szeged describes its origin.
