commercetools
Websitecommercetools is a headless commerce platform from Munich, Germany. It was founded in 2006 and became independent from its owner REWE Group in 2019, when Insight Partners invested 145 million dollars. The company says it works with more than 500 enterprises in over 50 countries. Customers named on its site include BMW, Sephora, John Lewis and Bang & Olufsen.
Features
- API-first commerce engine for catalogue, cart, checkout and orders, without a fixed storefront
- Composable approach: businesses combine commercetools with their own front end and other services
- Frontend product and tools aimed at digital commerce teams
- Positioned for unified commerce across web, store and chat channels, including AI agents
Limits
commercetools is enterprise software. It offers no ready-made template shop for small merchants and is normally introduced by a development team or a systems integrator. Small sellers looking for an alternative to Shopify will find Shopware or PrestaShop closer to their needs.
