Submit SuggestionShopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, founded in 2006 and listed on the Toronto and Nasdaq exchanges. It runs a hosted platform for online and in-person shops, including its own payment service, Shopify Payments. Its app store had more than 10,000 apps in 2024, and the company reports over five million customers.
The e-commerce platforms on this page are made in Europe. Shopware from Germany and PrestaShop from France are the best-known open-source systems and can be self-hosted. JTL-Shop and plentyONE are strong for German marketplace sellers. Sylius and commercetools are headless systems for development teams and larger projects.
Unlike Shopify, most European systems are not a single subscription with hosting, checkout and apps included. Hosting, themes and some extensions are chosen separately, usually with an agency, which gives more control and avoids per-order platform fees but needs more set-up work. Products and customers can usually be exported from Shopify as CSV files and imported into the new shop, while themes have to be rebuilt.
