Website

Checkmk is IT monitoring software from Checkmk GmbH in Munich. It began in 2008 as an add-on for Nagios by Mathias Kettner and was published under the GPL in 2009. The first official product release, Checkmk Raw, followed in 2012. The company was called Mathias Kettner GmbH and later tribe29, and has used its current name since April 2023.

Features

  • Monitoring of servers, networks, containers, cloud and hybrid infrastructure, used in more than 50 countries according to the company
  • A free community edition (formerly Raw) and commercial editions with more functions and support, following an open-core model
  • Offices in Munich, Atlanta and Minneapolis, and a yearly user conference in Munich since 2014

Ownership

In 2025 private equity funds managed by the US firm PSG Equity acquired the vast majority of the shares in the holding company behind Checkmk, as the Austrian competition authority records. The company is therefore shown as European with a non-European parent. Its headquarters and development remain in Munich. Teams that want to avoid non-European owners can compare the other tools in the infrastructure monitoring category.
