Icinga

Website

Icinga is open-source monitoring software developed by Icinga GmbH in Nuremberg, Germany. The project started in 2009 as a fork of Nagios, and Icinga 2, a complete rewrite in C++, followed in 2014. It checks the availability and performance of hosts, services, networks and applications and sends alerts when something fails.

Features

  • Agent-based and agentless checks via SNMP, SSH, ICMP, HTTP and WMI, compatible with the Nagios plugin interface
  • Configuration in files that can be kept in Git, plus Icinga Web and Icinga Director for a graphical interface
  • Cluster stack and REST API for distributed setups, native metric export through OpenTelemetry since version 2.16
  • Used according to Icinga by organisations such as Deutsche Telekom IT, ING, Worldline and the City of Cologne

Licence and model

The software is released under the GPLv3, and the company states that everything it ships is open source, with no proprietary edition that holds back functions. Paid offers cover support, training and services. It suits teams who like to define monitoring as code.
