Choosing HR software in Europe

Payroll law is national, so the first question is which countries need to be covered. Payfit concentrates on France, the UK and Spain, while Personio focuses on employers across Europe and Sage People targets multinational organisations. SAP states that SuccessFactors core HR is localised in more than 100 countries and payroll in over 55, which fits large enterprises. Lucca suits companies that want to combine single apps such as expenses or time management, and Factorial offers a broad suite that also reaches into finance and IT. Prices are usually per employee and month, and extra modules such as recruiting or performance management cost more.

Ownership notes

All listed vendors are European. Several are venture-backed, among them Personio, Factorial, Payfit and Lucca. The US fund General Atlantic led Payfit's 2022 round and Tiger Global invested in Factorial, but none of these investors is reported to hold a majority.

What Europe does not offer

For the largest global enterprises the choice is narrow. SAP is the main European suite at that scale, and people who currently use a US platform can read the page on European alternatives to Workday. Accounting and invoicing are covered by accounting software.
