Website

Bergader Privatkäserei is a Bavarian cheese dairy in Waging am See in Upper Bavaria. Basil Weixler started it in 1902 as a village dairy, and the company is still run by the founding family, now in its fourth generation. Bergader is known above all as a German producer and exporter of blue mould cheese and sells to around 45 countries.

Range

  • Bergader Edelpilz: the first blue mould cheese made from cow's milk in Germany, developed by Basil Weixler in the 1920s
  • Bavaria blu: soft blue cheese introduced in 1972
  • Bonifaz, Almzeit and Bergbauern Käse: mild, creamy and hard cheeses, the latter made from mountain farm milk
  • Watzmann, Bianco and smoked cheeses such as Basils

Ownership and scale

Bergader Privatkäserei GmbH is a mid sized family company with no foreign parent. Milk comes from farms in the Alpine foothills, including mountain farms. Compared with the large dairy groups the range is narrow and centred on blue and soft cheese.
