Catawiki

Website

Catawiki is an online auction platform for special objects, headquartered in Amsterdam. René Schoenmakers and Marco Jansen launched it in 2008 as a wiki for collectors. Since 2011 it has run weekly online auctions, curated by experts, for art, design, jewellery, watches, coins, stamps, classic cars, wine, toys and many other categories.

Features

  • More than 75,000 objects are auctioned every week in more than 80 categories, according to the company.
  • Each object is reviewed by an in-house expert before the auction is published.
  • Open bidding, secured payment through the platform, and shipping handled between seller and buyer.

Fees and limits

Buyers pay a buyer protection fee on top of the hammer price and sellers pay a commission, both listed on the Catawiki help pages. The model suits collectors and sellers of higher-value items, less so everyday goods. The investment firm Permira holds a minority stake since 2020, and the founders remain shareholders. Reuters reported in July 2026 that the owners were exploring options including a sale.
